Working With Sewing Patterns

Working With Sewing Patterns

Discover The Possibilities of Working From Sewing Patterns In this adult sewing class, we work exclusively from commercial or indie patterns for clothing, bags, home decor, and more! Working with printed patterns ensures consistent sizing, saves time on pattern creation, develops essential sewing skills, achieves professional-looking results, and familiarizes you with industry standards.  Understanding how commercial patterns work will provide endless options on your sewing journey! Who’s this class for: Absolute beginners who can probably thread a machine and sew a seam but have never worked with a pattern.  New to sewing?  Start with Sewing 101 for a solid foundation! More seasoned stitchers who have worked with patterns might be attempting something more complicated, find themselves stuck on a step, or just want constructive feedback. Note: If you’re looking for fitting help then you’ll want to book an adult class with Nancy. When is this class offered: This is an ongoing class that is booked one class at a time.  You may just need one class to get you on track, or you may need to book multiple to get over the finish line.  This is really determined by your skill level and how much “homework” you do between classes.  You can scroll down to the calendar to see the days and times available. What’s beyond the scope of this class: Pattern drafting from scratch Elaborate costumes (you know, with the really thick envelopes) Couture sewing or fine tailoring What’s included: All tools and equipment Sewing machines (bring your own if you wish) Plenty of practice fabric for prototyping Expert and patient instruction What do you need to bring: This depends on where you are in your process If you’ve already started your project then bring everything you have including thread, interfacing, notions, and any leftover scraps.  No need to bring tools unless you prefer something specific. If you have ideas and dreams but haven’t started yet, Welcome!  Let’s get you started on the right track! Beginners working with patterns often find frustration assembling all the proper supplies for their project.  From the wrong size pattern to inappropriate fabric, and thread, it can be a disappointing start to what should be fun and exciting!  Before your first class, the only thing you really need is the pattern you’re using in the correct size (not your clothing store size).  We’ll prepare the pattern and discuss which supplies and how much of each you’ll need which will save you time and frustration.  Check out our What Pattern Size Am I page to help get the correct size pattern. Sources for patterns: Joann Fabrics:  Always at least one pattern brand on sale, shop in person for deep discounts PatternReview: Check reviews with photos of most patterns, shop for hard-to-find brands ETSY: Great source for independent designers, quality can be variable, and often patterns require more work to assemble.
